Volunteer Spotlight: Serving as the Hands, Feet, and Wheels of Jesus
Volunteers

Volunteers play a vital role in the ministry of Fellowship Missions. They bring compassion, encouragement, and practical support to men and women working toward stability and hope. Through simple acts of service, volunteers help reflect the love of Christ to those who need it most.

Today, we’re highlighting Joy Lavender, a volunteer who serves by providing transportation for residents to and from medical appointments, supporting them as they continue their healing journey. Her story shows how God works through ordinary moments to create meaningful connections and lasting impact.
Answering The Call To Serve
After retiring, Joy found herself with more time to invest in the things that mattered most. Volunteering had always played an important role in her life, and she began praying about where God wanted her to serve next.
Fellowship Missions stood out as the right place.
She had already supported the ministry by donating items, but she felt God prompting her to get more involved. Driving residents seemed like a natural fit.
“I have always enjoyed volunteering, and after retirement, I had the opportunity to expand that interest,” she shared. “I had known about Fellowship Missions and had donated items before. As I prayed for direction, Fellowship Missions felt like a good fit. I enjoy driving and getting to know new people.”
She also felt drawn to the heart behind the ministry.
“I know how wonderful Fellowship Missions’ mission is, and I strongly support that goal. They serve as the hands and feet of Jesus by caring for people experiencing homelessness and sharing Jesus with them.”
Building Relationships Along The Way
Driving residents to appointments might sound simple, but those moments often create opportunities for connection.
Spending time together in the car allows conversations to unfold naturally. Residents sometimes open up about their experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future.
“I enjoy getting to know the residents who stay at the emergency shelter,” she said. “While I never ask about their circumstances, I often find that the closeness and quiet of the car make it easy for someone to share a bit of their story.”
These conversations create meaningful opportunities to encourage others.
“If the opportunity comes up, I share God’s love and grace with them,” she said.
Through these small interactions, she reminds residents that they matter and that they aren’t alone in their journey.
Growing Through Service
Serving others often changes the life of the volunteer as much as the people they help. Joy has experienced that transformation firsthand.
“God works in my life because I am blessed to serve Him,” she explained. “I have grown in my compassion and care for others. God’s Word tells us to help those in need.”
Driving residents may seem like a small task, but it carries a deeper purpose. “By driving for these wonderful women, I get to be the hands and feet and wheels of Jesus.”
Each ride becomes an opportunity for Joy to show kindness, patience, and encouragement.
Seeing Lives Change
Through her time at Fellowship Missions, Joy has also witnessed growth in the lives of the women she serves.
Friendships have formed along the way, and she has watched several residents strengthen their faith and take meaningful steps forward.
“I have developed friendships with some of the women and have seen them grow in their faith,” she said. “Every woman I’ve met has tried to improve her circumstances.”
She also recognizes the important role Fellowship Missions plays in guiding residents toward transformation.
“Fellowship Missions does a wonderful job presenting Christ to the residents. They teach life skills, conduct Bible studies, and provide mentoring opportunities.”
These programs give residents the tools and support they need to rebuild their lives with hope and purpose.
A Simple Invitation
Her message to others in our community is simple: “Get involved, and you’ll be blessed.”
Volunteers help Fellowship Missions provide transportation, mentorship, encouragement, and practical support for residents working toward stability. Each volunteer brings unique gifts that help strengthen the ministry.
Whether someone enjoys driving, mentoring, organizing donations, or helping with events, there are many ways to serve.
When people step forward to help, they become part of something bigger. They join a community that walks alongside individuals seeking healing, stability, and a new beginning.
