Volunteer Spotlight: Tom and Jean Drummond
Volunteers
At Fellowship Missions, we are blessed by volunteers who pour their time, talents, and hearts into serving others. Tom and Jean are a husband-and-wife team who have been instrumental in shaping not just our spaces, but our community as a whole.

Their story is one of service, creativity, and friendship, all rooted in their love for God and others.
Jean’s Heart for Serving
Jean’s journey with Fellowship Missions began in simple but meaningful ways. She started by providing meals, shopping from our needs list, and even bringing supplies for craft projects with the ladies in our shelter. What began as filling practical needs soon grew into deeper service.
Jean became a mentor, developing a beautiful relationship with one of our early residents at the Winona Avenue building. They would share lunches and coffee, spending time talking and encouraging each other.
Though her mentee has since passed away, their friendship left a lasting impact on both of their lives.
Today, Jean continues to bless others through her creativity and care. She serves as a host in the Maker’s Space at The Gathering Place, purchases items from our needs list, and uses her sewing skills to mend clothes for residents.
She even surprises staff from time to time with sweet, unexpected gifts. Her servant heart is evident in everything she does.
Tom’s Skill and Craftsmanship
Behind Jean’s sewing table sits a handcrafted piece of furniture built by her husband, Tom. Known as the go-to fixer around Fellowship Missions, Tom has been a key part of nearly every major project we’ve undertaken.
He served as the supervisor for remodeling both our current building and The Gathering Place. If you’ve ever admired the live-edge wood coffee bar at The Gathering Place, that’s Tom’s handiwork.
When something breaks or needs to be built, Tom is the one we call. But it’s not just his skills that make a difference. Tom also takes time to sit with the men at The Gathering Place, sharing coffee and conversation. His presence and friendships are as impactful as his craftsmanship.
Why They Serve
Jean and Tom both began volunteering out of a desire to meet needs in their community. Jean explains, “I became aware of the great need in our community.” Tom adds, “After retiring from the fire department, I wanted to use my talent to help others.”
Their service has brought them joy as well. Jean loves the variety of ways to help and especially enjoys shopping for items from the needs list.
Tom values the friendships he has formed, saying, “I enjoy getting to know and making friendships with the people at the mission while working with them.”
Moments of Connection
For Jean, one of her most meaningful memories was her friendship with the woman she mentored. “We were a blessing to each other,” she recalls. Tom shares that he has been deeply blessed to form friendships with several men and to watch them grow.
These stories remind us that service is not only about meeting physical needs, but also about building relationships that last.
Words of Encouragement
Jean encourages others to explore the many opportunities to get involved: “Look at all the different options of places to serve. There are many choices. Everyone can do something.”
Tom’s advice is straightforward: “Just do it! Everyone has a talent that can be used, no matter how small or large. You will receive a blessing from it.”
A Foundation of Faith
Both Tom and Jean anchor their service in their faith. Their favorite verses reflect that foundation:
- Jean: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1
- Tom: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
